Family of 6 Orphans

May 22nd, 2012

My dad recently came back from a trip to Kitale Kenya where he does mission work with Love Mercy....  Each time he returns I have a great time hearing about his adventures!  Since my year long stay in Kenya I have a good understanding of the terrain he travels through.  When he returned on his last trip a few weeks ago, one story seemed to stick out above the rest...

While he and a team were out one day he was approached by a young Kenyan boy about 11 years old with a letter that explained the plite of he and his brothers and sisters.  Anyone who has served in Kenya would be familiar with tactics like these, some which are genuine and some a complete scam.  After reading the letter something told him to investigate the distress letter.  The story summarized went something like this....  Six children lived with their mother about 15 km outside of Kitale Kenya in a nice house and property.  Their mother fell ill and died leaving the children to fend for themselves.  A naive family of children were aided by a wealthy neighbor to make funeral arrangements for their mother as they grieved.  Their neighbor made a deal with the children that he would pay for the funeral costs but they would have to pay him back.  With the debt on their little shoulders they attempted to wash clothes for a living which paid 50 bob (40 cents) a day.  What seemed to be a friend to help the children soon took a nasty turn.  The wealthy neighbor told the children the only way to repay their debts was to turn over their home to him.  He then legally took there home and the children were out on the street.

My dad decided to speak to the man who had the children's land and inquire what it would take to get it returned to them.  The bill was 80,000 ksh which is equal to about $880 usd.  For the children to raise this money it would be impossible.  My dad decided to follow his heart and reinstate the children back in their home!  There was newer furniture placed in the home by the wealthy neighbor and he also paid for newer furniture to be left for the family of orphans to have.  The children had their land and home back to live in and it was totally furnished for them.  The eldest daughter was given a job at the Love Mercy admin office located in Kitale so that they could support themselves.  The family has been transformed.

I summarized the story and left out key dates and info that make it much more dynamic.  I put the entire letter below for those who can and will read the broken English.  If you are interested in getting more information about this story you may call Noel Alexander at 913.782.0483 or email at noel@lovemercy.com

My father requested this story be put out on the Internet so that anyone who heard it and felt like they would like to aid this family of 6 orphans further would get the opportunity.  Thank you in advance for your generosity.  Info is below.
